Daughters Beyond Incarceration and Navigate NOLA present Capturing Resilience, a collection of documentary portraiture by Janae Hurst. This exhibit features works that vividly illustrate the unstoppable spirit of Black girls whose lives are not only impacted by gender, but also race, class and parental incarceration. Capturing Resilience has been developed in partnership with DBI, Navigate NOLA and New Orleans Recreational Department Commission.
It is a critical exploration of the mass incarceration of Black males through the lens of their daughters, a perspective that historically has been ignored. Photography is used as a tool to elevate the often-ignored voices of Black girls impacted by parental incarceration. The images also provoke discussion, as Capturing Resilience tells the story of the impact of dealing with parental incarceration has on a young girl’s daily life. This traveling exhibit is also an advocacy toll that will be housed across multiple NORD Centers. Capturing Resilience is a raw and honest collection that represents the girls’ fight to define their own resilience and will excite activism around shaping policy that seeks to meet the unique needs of the children of incarcerated parents.
